El Camino Real

🇬🇧: “El Camino Real” (or “The Royal Road” is a 600 mile stretch of road along which the 21 California Missions are located.
🔸Mission San Diego is the oldest one, founded in 1769 to convert the native Kumeyaay people to Catholicism and make them loyal Spanish citizens. Six years after it was built, the mission was raided and set on fire by the Native Americans, but in 1776 it was restored and a defense wall was built to prevent future attacks
.
In the meantime, Spanish diseases that were lethal for the Native Americans started to spread, the environmental degradation caused by invasive species brought by the Spanish dramatically changed the environment and Native food sources became less reliable.
For the Indian communities, the missions presented an option in a time of great upheaval and by 1797, 565 local Indians received baptism.
.
Within the missions, the Indians were required to do all sorts of works, but if they were baptized, they were not allowed to leave without permission, prohibited from growing crops outside of mission lands and from learning to ride horses. If they disobeyed, they were subject to corporal punishments.
Crazy that such a sad page of history left us with such beautiful remains.
